Edenburg
The Edenburg, also called Jestetten Castle and the Tower of Jestetten, once stood on a hill now occupied by the local cemetery on the edge of Jestetten. The medieval stronghold vanished centuries ago, leaving only traces beneath the soil. In 1668 builders reused its foundations to create the Loretto Chapel, a small Baroque place of worship. Historians recognise the site as an early example of a high-mediaeval hilltop tower. Artefacts uncovered during groundwork confirm the castle’s existence in the 15th century. A modern information board beside the chapel still marks the spot where the walls once rose. Visitors find a quiet hilltop graveyard surrounding the Loretto Chapel. The chapel’s white walls and red roof contrast with the older gravestones scattered nearby. From the hill there are wide views across the valley towards the Swiss border. A short path leads up from the village street, making the spot easy to reach. The peaceful atmosphere invites a moment of reflection on the layers of history beneath the grass.
