Burgstall Einberg
The Burgstall Einberg stands on the summit of Einberg hill, 460 metres above sea level, about 1.75 kilometres northeast of Furth im Wald in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It was a medieval hilltop castle whose remains are now protected as an archaeological monument. The site is listed in the Bavarian state atlas under the reference D-3-6643-0020. No written records survive about when the castle was built or who owned it. By the 18th century only the foundations were still visible. Historians such as Bernhard Ernst have studied the castle’s place in the region’s building traditions. His catalogue of castles in south-eastern Upper Palatinate includes a detailed entry for Einberg. The European Castle Institute’s EBIDAT database also documents the vanished fortress. A private collection, Alle Burgen, preserves further notes on the site’s history. Visitors reach the hilltop by following paths from Furth im Wald. The summit offers wide views across the surrounding countryside. Grass and low scrub now cover the former stronghold. A few low stone courses mark where walls once stood. The quiet spot invites reflection on the castle’s vanished past.
