Celine and Heiner Bastian exhibition room

Haus Bastian stands beside the Museumsinsel on the Kupfergraben in central Berlin. The building was designed by David Chipperfield as a private art gallery for Heiner Bastian and completed in 2007. Its four storeys rise above the footprint of the structure destroyed in the Second World War. The gallery opened with exhibitions by Damien Hirst and Jonathan Meese before becoming a family-run space. In 2019 it was donated to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and reopened as a public education centre. The interior now offers 2 000 square metres of flexible learning, discovery and communication rooms on four levels. Chipperfield used salvaged bricks and concrete to recreate the original dimensions, while large windows fill the 5.5-metre-high spaces with daylight. The building has twice been recognised by Berlin’s architectural awards. Visitors find changing programmes of events and displays throughout the light-filled floors.
