Gablitzbach

The Gablitzbach is a left tributary of the Wienfluss in Lower Austria. It rises near the Riederberg pass and the Rauchbuchberg at about 380 metres above sea level. Some maps give the Laabach, which is stronger in flow, as the true hydrological source at 405 metres above sea level. The Laabach flows north then east for almost three kilometres before joining the Gablitzbach above the Allhang sports ground. The stream passes through Gablitz and then Purkersdorf, where it turns south-east to reach the Wienfluss. More than thirteen small brooks and ditches feed the Gablitzbach, half of them carrying water only at certain times. Left tributaries include the Taglesbach, Allhangbach and Brandgräben; right tributaries include the Höbersbach, Parzgraben and Hauersteigbach. Two small flood-retention basins were built at Allhang and Höbersbach above Gablitz. In 2007 heavy rain and an accidental discharge from a settling tank at the Taglesberg landfill, caused by the Wienerwald tunnel works, polluted the Gablitzbach.
