Cultural heritage D-5-6430-0075 in Diespeck

Schloss Dettendorf stands in Dettendorf, a village that forms part of the Diespeck municipality in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district of Middle Franconia. The site was probably settled before the year 900 but first appears in written records in 1401 as Tedendorff. At that time the Nuremberg burgraves and a cadet branch of the Seckendorff family held the estate as feudal lords. After the burgraves’ rights passed to Brandenburg-Kulmbach, Konrad von Lüchau became lord of the manor between 1502 and 1506, though the high jurisdiction remained with the Brandenburg-Kulmbach office at Neustadt. The estate later belonged to the Danngrieß family and, in the first half of the 19th century, to the Pückler-Limpurg counts at Brunn. Markgraf Christian Ernst bought the manor on 31 August 1707. The two-storey building, covered by a hipped roof, was demolished in 1923. Traces of its former eastern gateway survive: the south gable of a new house still shows the Danngrieß coat of arms dated 1787, though it has recently been painted over. The original stone quoins and pilasters can still be recognised at the corners. Visitors today can walk around the quiet village and look for the faint remains of the old Schloss. The south gable of the modern house carries the faded Danngrieß arms, and the building’s corners still display the original squared stones and pilaster strips. The surrounding farmland and orchards recall the estate’s former fields, while the peaceful lanes invite a slow exploration of the place where a medieval castle once stood.
