Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul stands in the village of Old Brampton, a quiet settlement in North East Derbyshire. The building is a Grade I listed Anglican church, its oldest part being the 12th-century porch which was mostly rebuilt in the 14th century. Inside, the nave and south aisle roofs were renewed in 1868, the floor was lowered to its original level, and all the windows were reglazed with cathedral glass. The tower was opened to the church and fitted with seating, while a new vestry was added at the same time. The restoration work was carried out by local builder Mr Marriott of Staveley. The church’s organ was installed in 1882 by Brindley & Foster and opened by Henry Norman Biggin, organist of St Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield. In 1923 the bells were recast and a new burial ground was consecrated by the Bishop of Southwell, Sir Edwyn Hoskyns, 12th Baronet. The church shares its parish with St Lawrence’s Church in Great Barlow and the Cutthorpe Institute in Cutthorpe. Its Grade I listing recognises its historical and architectural importance. Visitors find a spacious nave with clear lines from the 1868 restoration and tall windows of cathedral glass. The tower now forms part of the interior space, with seating arranged around it. The 1882 organ stands on the south side, its pipes visible above the case. The porch retains its medieval doorway, while the vestry provides a quiet space for reflection. The churchyard contains the new burial ground consecrated in 1923, with mature trees framing the view.
