Meadowhall Centre
Meadowhall is a large indoor shopping centre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, standing three miles north-east of the city centre and two miles from Rotherham. Built on the site of a former steelworks, it opened in 1990 and now covers 139,355 square metres. The design was inspired by a Canadian shopping centre, giving it a bright, spacious interior. It is the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire and one of the biggest in the United Kingdom. A separate retail park lies just over a mile to the south.
The centre draws around 30 million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited in the country. It has over 280 stores and has hosted major brands including Apple, Puma and Primark. A £91 million refurbishment in 2006 introduced new cafés, lifts and a glazed atrium. The Oasis food court once featured the only McCafé in Yorkshire and a Namco arcade. Park Lane, now a boutique arcade, houses stores like Flannels and Hugo Boss.
Visitors find several themed areas to explore. The High Street offers everyday shops and banks, while The Arcade provides family activities. The Avenue focuses on upmarket boutiques, and The Gallery holds anchor stores alongside smaller retailers. The Oasis has dining and leisure options, and The Lanes leads to this space. Flood defences were strengthened after the 2007 floods when water reached 1.8 metres inside.
