Tiroler Kogel

The Tiroler Kogel is a striking two-thousand-metre peak on the western edge of the Tennengebirge in Salzburg, where the Tennengau meets the Pongau. Its western face drops 1,800 metres of rock and scree into the deeply cut Salzach valley, giving wide views toward the Hagengebirge and the Hochkönig. A narrow, exposed ridge links the mountain northwards to the Sulzauer Kopf, while to the east grassy slopes and karren fields fall toward the Pitschenbergtal and the Leopold-Happisch-House.
Climbing the Tiroler Kogel demands sure-footedness, a head for heights, good fitness and alpine experience. Sudden storms or fog can make navigation dangerous, so even in summer the summit cross is rarely visited. The shortest route starts from the Dr.-Friedrich-Oedl-House near the Eisriesenwelt, gaining 800 metres in three hours over the Hochkogelsteig to a hunting hut, then along marked sections to the summit. A longer but classic line begins at Stegenwald inn, climbs 1,800 metres in six hours via the Ofenrinne and Pitschenbergalm to the Leopold-Happisch-House, and finishes on exposed scree to the top.
On the summit visitors find a metal cross and sweeping views of the surrounding limestone giants. The ridge to the Sulzauer Kopf offers airy scrambling, while the eastern flanks drop to the Gruber ice cave and the alpine meadows of the Pitschenbergtal. The contrast between the sheer western face and the gentler eastern slopes makes the mountain a memorable challenge for experienced hikers.
