Schubartstube

The Schubartstube is a small literature museum in Blaubeuren, set inside the former office of Blaubeuren Abbey. It marks the arrest of Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, a poet and writer, who was taken from this building on 23 January 1777 by order of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg. The room where Schubart was held now displays portraits, first editions of his poems, copies of his journal Deutsche Chronik and a facsimile of the duke’s warrant. The exhibition also explores the links between Blaubeuren and Eduard Mörike’s fairy tale Historie von der schönen Lau. Visitors see early editions, intricate 19th-century prints and Luise Duttenhofer’s paper-cut illustrations. A separate section honours Agnes Sapper, a forgotten children’s author who once lived in the town. Nearby, the Blautopf spring inspired Mörike’s tale, and a sculpture of the water nymph stands by the old mill. Beyond the museum, Blaubeuren’s Evangelisch-theological Seminar has produced notable writers such as Wilhelm Hauff and Friedrich Theodor Vischer. The town also preserves the Bolegsches Haus, where Agnes Sapper once lived, and the ruins of Ruck Castle, home of the medieval Minnesänger Heinrich von Rugge. Together, these sites form a quiet trail through the region’s literary past.
