Weingartenloch

Weingartenloch is a small cave in the hills above Osterhagen, a village in the Landkreis Göttingen. The entrance is a narrow gap in the rock face, just wide enough for one person to squeeze through. Local stories once claimed the cave held hidden treasures, drawing greedy adventurers who never returned. In truth it is only a geological feature, a hollow in the limestone formed by water over centuries. The cave lies on private farmland, surrounded by fields and beech woods that turn golden in autumn. A rough farm track leads to the site, ending at a locked gate where visitors must leave their cars. The cave’s fame comes from old tales rather than its size or contents. One legend tells how the people of Osterhagen lured a poor father into the cave by offering money for his eight children. The trick ended badly, adding to the site’s grim reputation. Geologists later confirmed there are no riches inside, only damp rock and a short crawl space. The cave is barely twenty metres long and ends in a tight squeeze where the roof meets the floor. Yet the stories keep the place alive in local memory. Visitors today find a quiet spot where folklore meets limestone. The gate keeps the entrance clear of livestock and casual walkers. Inside, the cave walls glisten with moisture and the air stays cool even in summer. Outside, the view stretches over rolling farmland to the Harz mountains on the horizon. The cave itself offers little to see beyond its damp walls, but the walk through the woods and the old stories make the trip worthwhile.
