UWC Atlantic College
UWC Atlantic College stands on a hillside above the Vale of Glamorgan, its grey-stone buildings grouped around St Donat’s Castle. The college occupies the castle grounds, with views across fields to the Bristol Channel. The site includes a 12th-century castle keep and later additions, all adapted for modern study. The main block overlooks playing fields and a sheltered cove below. Paths wind past gardens and sports pitches to the shoreline. The setting combines historic stonework with sweeping coastal scenery. The college was founded in 1962 by Kurt Hahn to bring together young people from divided nations. It became the first United World College and helped create the International Baccalaureate. Students come from more than ninety countries, many on scholarships arranged by national committees. The college has been led by figures such as Rear Admiral Desmond Hoare and Sir Lawrence Darvall. Its alumni include refugees, royals and political figures who studied alongside one another. The college’s ethos of service and sustainability remains central to its work. Inside, students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in classrooms set within the castle. Each week they undertake three hours of community service chosen from local projects. The college runs a boat-building workshop where students help maintain inshore lifeboats. Every year a Project Week offers expeditions or service trips abroad. Conferences every term let students explore global issues in depth. Outside, the shoreline provides a quiet place for reflection between lessons.
