Turmhügel Darze
The Turmhügel Darze, also called Eierberg or Der Wall, stands on the eastern edge of Darze, a village in the Altenhof municipality within the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. It is the remains of a lowland motte-and-bailey castle built on a raised mound surrounded by a ditch. The site sits in gently rolling farmland near several lakes, giving it a quiet, rural setting. The motte was constructed in the 13th to 16th centuries as a small noble residence and defensive point. Archaeological work recorded traces of a wooden tower and earthworks, though most of the structure has vanished over time. Uwe Schwarz’s 1987 study documents the site among similar lowland castles in the Neubrandenburg region. Visitors find a modest grassy mound about two metres high, with a shallow depression marking the former ditch along the south and southeast sides. The surrounding fields stretch away to woodlands, and the nearby lakes add to the peaceful atmosphere. There are no buildings or fences, so the earthworks can be viewed from close by. The site offers a quiet glimpse into medieval fortification in a landscape shaped by lakes and gentle hills.
