Schloss Birstein stands on a narrow ridge in the village of Birstein, in the north-east of Hesse’s Main-Kinzig district. It has been home to the counts and later princes of Isenburg-Birstein since 1517, and remains a private residence today. The complex grew from a 12th-century core into a three-courtyard palace between the 12th and 18th centuries, with few later changes. In the 19th century the old fortifications were removed and a landscaped garden added.

The medieval keep encloses the smallest courtyard, while the New Palace of 1763–68 bridges the gap to the outer forecourt. The portal is the Archive and Chancellery Building, designed in 1733 by Christian Ludwig Hermann, the Hanau master builder. North of the keep lies the Coach Court, surrounded by 16th-century Renaissance wings whose roofs were remodelled in the 18th century. The buildings still hold rich historic furnishings.

Visitors enter through the Chancellery portal and pass into the sequence of courtyards. The medieval keep and its tiny courtyard form the core, while the New Palace shows late Baroque style. The Coach Court’s Renaissance wings display original detailing beneath later roofs. The family lives in private apartments, but the public areas reveal centuries of princely life. The landscaped garden offers views across the surrounding countryside.
