Airport Metro station

Airport Metro station stands beside Newcastle International Airport in Woolsington. It opened in 1991 as the end of a new Metro line from Bank Foot, built along the old Ponteland Railway route. The station’s pyramid-shaped building once linked to the airport terminal by covered walkways. A second platform and an extra station at Callerton Parkway were added when the line opened. In 2014 the service was ranked among the country’s best airport rail links, scoring eighty-five per cent satisfaction. The station handled over a million passengers in 2024, far above the pre-pandemic total. Step-free routes run from the terminal through the ticket hall to the island platform. Ticket machines accept cards, notes and coins, and automatic barriers control access. Next-train displays and help points sit on both platforms for ease and safety. Trains run south to South Hylton via Central Station and Sunderland, with up to five departures each hour on weekdays. The covered walkways and shelter protect passengers from the weather while they wait. The station shows how a modern Metro can serve an airport efficiently and comfortably.
