Schloss Hammel

Schloss Hammel stands in the village of Hammel, part of Neusäß in the Augsburg district of Swabia. A moated castle rebuilt in the 16th century, it has been owned by the von Stetten family for generations. The present building shows later additions, including a 19th-century renovation and an east–west wing extended in 1891 by the Augsburg architect Jean Keller. The house is worth the journey for its layered history and the names attached to it. Wolfgang von Paler the Elder received Hammel in 1550 and commissioned the new castle soon after. After Swedish destruction in 1648, Raimund Egger restored it, and marriage brought two-thirds of the property to the von Stettens. In 1891 Keller added the wing and decorated the great hall with neobaroque murals, while Auguste Monika von Plessen is said to have set three improvements as conditions of her marriage. Visitors enter through a lime-tree avenue and pass a square gatehouse bearing the von Stetten arms. Inside, the large upstairs hall carries Keller’s painted scenes. Outside, the south-east corner of the curtain wall rises in a Malakow tower, a reminder of the Crimean War’s Malakoff redoubt. The moat and tree-lined approach complete the quiet, dignified setting.
