Pfarrkirche Fels am Wagram

The parish church of Fels am Wagram stands on a small hill in the eastern part of the village, which belongs to the district of Tulln in Lower Austria. It is dedicated to Saint Margaret and has been under Denkmalschutz since the 17th century. The church belongs to the deanery of Hadersdorf within the vicariate of Unter dem Manhartsberg in the Archdiocese of Vienna. The church began as a branch of Kirchberg am Wagram and became an independent parish before 1590. Its original Gothic structure was transformed into an early Baroque building in 1697. By 1962 the church had become unsafe and was demolished, though the tower and choir were preserved. Architect Johann Petermair rebuilt it in 1963, closely following the Baroque predecessor and adding a large northern chapel under a tall asymmetrical roof. Inside, the high altar shows a painting of Saint Margaret and the Trinity by Martin Johann Schmidt from about 1786. Viktor Hammer designed the modern altar, relief and tabernacle in 1963. The organ was built by Friedrich Heftner. The church’s surroundings include the preserved medieval tower and choir, offering a quiet spot above the village.
