Parish Church of St Mary

St Mary’s is an active Grade I listed parish church in Redbourn, Hertfordshire. The oldest parts of the building, the nave and west tower, date from the 12th century. Around 1140 the north aisle was added, followed by the chancel in 1340. The south aisle appeared in the mid-14th century, with the south chapel and porch built between 1444 and 1455. The clerestory was added near the end of the 15th century. The church holds several notable memorials. A window installed in 1886 remembers Rev. W. Serocold Wade and was designed by Mayer of London and Munich. Inside are memorials to Sir Richard Rede, who died in 1576, and Richard Peacock from 1512. Another plaque marks Eignon Bignon and his wife from 1717. Visitors find a pipe organ originally built in 1888 by Forster and Andrews. It has been rebuilt three times, most recently in 2005 by Vincent Woodstock. The church’s layered architecture shows centuries of change, from Norman arches to Perpendicular windows. The peaceful churchyard surrounds the building, offering a quiet place to reflect.
