Gower Monument

The Gower Monument stands beside the River Avon in Bancroft Gardens, Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1888 to honour William Shakespeare. The monument’s centrepiece is a seated bronze figure of the playwright holding a pen and a manuscript. Four detached bronze statues nearby represent Shakespearean characters: Prince Hal, Lady Macbeth, Hamlet, and Falstaff. Each character embodies a different aspect of Shakespeare’s art—history, tragedy, philosophy, and comedy. The stone base combines Yorkstone and Bath stone, while the sculptures are bronze. Greek masks adorn the corners of the central plinth. The monument was designed over twelve years in Paris by Lord Ronald Gower and sculptors Luca Madrassi, Raux & Marley, and the House of De Cauville & Perzinku. Its unveiling in 1888 included a speech by Sir Francis Philip Cunliffe-Owen and a poem read by Oscar Wilde. The event drew criticism from *Punch* magazine, which questioned its design and cost. Originally placed behind the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, it was moved to Bancroft Gardens in 1933 after the theatre’s fire. The monument was granted listed status in 1951. Visitors find the seated Shakespeare statue at the heart of the monument, surrounded by the four bronze character figures on separate pedestals. Inscribed lines from *Henry V*, *Henry IV, Part 2*, *Macbeth*, and *Hamlet* appear on the central plinth. The bronze masks at each corner add classical detail. The riverside location in Bancroft Gardens offers views of the water and the theatre beyond. The monument’s bronze and stone materials stand out against the garden’s greenery.
