City fortifications of Boxberg
Matthäus Merian Public domain

The medieval town wall of Boxberg once enclosed the whole settlement. Today only fragments remain, but they still stand along Kurpfalzstraße near the former courthouse, now the town hall. One stretch shows a tower base, a stretch of curtain wall, and a small gate arch with a granary above it. The surviving stones date from the 14th century when Boxberg became a walled town.

The best-preserved section is protected as a listed monument. Visitors can walk beside the wall and look up at the weathered ashlar blocks that once carried a wooden palisade. A small square tower base juts out beside the gate arch, giving a sense of how the defences once stood. The granary above the arch shows how the wall was used long after its military role ended.

From the wall the view opens over Boxberg’s rooftops and the surrounding Tauber valley. The remaining stretch is short but clearly marks the line of the old perimeter. A map in the town hall shows where the wall once ran, so walkers can follow its ghostly trace through quiet streets. The quiet spot beside the listed remains is a good place to stand and picture the town as it was six centuries ago.
