Ickenham tube station

Ickenham station stands on the edge of the London Borough of Hillingdon, on the western edge of London. It sits between Hillingdon and Ruislip on the Uxbridge branches of the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines. The station is in London fare zone 6, making it one of the outer stops on the network. The line through Ickenham was opened by the Metropolitan Railway in 1904, with electric trains following a year later. The halt was added in 1905 after pressure from the parish council, who wanted a stop for day-trippers from London. The station’s early years saw it grow from a simple halt into a place where visitors came to enjoy rural surroundings. Villagers sold garden flowers and served teas to travellers, while the parish council arranged platform shelters and a booking hut. By 1922 the platforms were lengthened to allow full-length trains to stop. In 1933 the District line was replaced by Piccadilly line trains, which still serve the station today. A rebuilding in the early 1970s gave the station its present form. Today Ickenham station is a quiet but busy junction where two Tube lines meet. The platforms sit between brick retaining walls and modern shelters, with clear signage for passengers. The area around the station remains leafy, with houses and gardens close by. Buses U10 and 278 link the station to local streets and beyond. Step-free access was added in 2022, making the station fully accessible.
