Stadtburg Hollfeld

The Stadtburg Hollfeld once stood on a rocky spur at 410 metres above sea level where the Wiesent and Kainach rivers meet. It was built in the early Middle Ages, during the Ottonian period, and first recorded in 1017. The fort protected the upper town, from which the present-day historic centre grew. Today the castle itself has vanished, leaving no visible remains. Only the layout of the old town shows where its walls once stood. The site’s importance lies in its role in forming Hollfeld’s medieval upper town. Archaeologists recognise the burg as one of the earliest fortifications in the region. Its presence shaped the streets and squares that visitors now walk through. The nearby Marienplatz marks the old castle grounds. Though the stone walls are gone, the town’s layout still reflects the fortress plan. Visitors find a quiet square at the former castle site, surrounded by well-preserved medieval houses. The historic centre retains its old streets and gabled roofs from the 18th century. A small hill behind the square offers a view over the river junction. The town’s museum displays finds from the site. Hollfeld’s peaceful atmosphere contrasts with the vanished fortress that once dominated it.
