Low Force
Low Force is a waterfall on the River Tees, standing 18 feet high. It lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the European Geopark. The falls mark the historic boundary between Yorkshire and County Durham, though both banks now fall under County Durham’s administration. Nearby stands the Wynch Bridge, built in 1830, which crosses the Tees just above the falls. Signs warn that only one person should cross at a time due to its age and possible instability. The site has appeared in major film and television productions. Scenes from the 2019 film *1917* were shot nearby, with prosthetic bodies placed along the route to enhance realism. In 2020, the falls featured in episode seven of *The Witcher*’s second season, filmed on the Tees’ banks. These appearances have drawn wider attention to the dramatic landscape and its rugged beauty. Visitors find the falls framed by steep wooded banks and fast-flowing water. The Wynch Bridge offers a narrow crossing just above the cascade, with views of the churning river below. The surrounding area is quiet and remote, ideal for short walks along well-trodden paths. The Tees continues upstream to High Force, another waterfall worth seeing. The setting remains unspoilt, with few signs of modern development.
