Tanzenberg Castle

Schloss Tanzenberg stands on a gentle rise above the Zollfeld plain in Carinthia. The four-winged Renaissance palace was begun in 1515 by Siegmund and Wolfgang von Keutschach for Maximilian I. Two lower floors still show the original 16th-century stonework. The northeast corner keeps fragments of the medieval castle. After long neglect in the 19th century, the Olivetans restored it as a monastery in 1898. The building’s significance lies in its early Renaissance design and later conversion into a church and school. The three-nave basilica, built in stages from 1900 to 1987, has large mosaic panels by Josef Pfefferle. Inside, Valentin Oman’s tempera paintings and altarpiece reinterpret sacred themes. The complex also houses a Catholic grammar school run by the Diocese of Gurk. Visitors walk through the rectangular courtyard framed by arcaded galleries. The Neo-Romanesque church façade displays three striking mosaics of saints and angels. Inside, Oman’s murals cover the sanctuary walls with scenes of human life. The former banqueting hall wing now serves classrooms for pupils aged ten to eighteen.
