Barfüßerkloster Osnabrück

The Barfüßerkloster once stood on the southern edge of Osnabrück’s old town, close to St Katharinen Church. Built by Franciscan friars in the 13th and 14th centuries, the complex served as a monastery until the Reformation. After the friars left in the 16th century, the buildings briefly housed an evangelical school before being demolished in the late 17th century. A single stretch of the original perimeter wall survives today. Made of rough stone, it carries part of a Gothic doorway with richly moulded edges. In 2023, when recent buildings were removed, the buried foundations of the monastery reappeared. Archaeologists recorded these remains before new shops and flats were constructed above them. Visitors can still see the preserved wall and portal fragment beside the modern development. The site offers a quiet corner where the medieval past meets the present street plan. A plaque explains what once stood here, linking the ruins to the town’s history.
