River Averon

The River Averon winds through Easter Ross in north-east Scotland before joining the Cromarty Firth. It begins at Loch Morie and soon becomes the Alness River as it passes the town of Alness. After flowing east for about fifteen kilometres, the river turns southward for the final stretch to the sea. The Abhainn na Glass feeds Loch Morie and forms part of the same water system. A smaller river called the Blackwater, also known locally as the Rusdale, joins the Averon near Alness. The Averon’s clear waters once powered several mills along its banks. Salmon and trout still run up the river each season, drawing anglers to its pools. The surrounding farmland and wooded strips give the valley a quiet, rural feel. Visitors can walk sections of the old drove roads that once carried cattle to market. The river’s modest length keeps it from the busier tourist routes, so its banks remain peaceful. Paths follow the river through fields and small copses, offering views of the Cromarty Firth in the distance. Near the mouth, the water widens and the air carries the tang of salt. The town of Alness sits just above the tidal reach, where the river’s flow slows before meeting the firth. From the bridge or riverside park, the whole short valley can be seen at a glance.
