Pfarrkirche Hl. Johannes der Täufer, Walchsee
The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist stands beside the main road in Walchsee, a village in the Kufstein district of Tirol. The church, its graveyard and the war memorial are all protected as historic monuments. A church has stood here since 1399, though the present building mixes late-Gothic and Baroque styles. The church’s west tower dates from the 15th century but wears Baroque openings added in 1773. Inside, the nave has a barrel vault with lunettes, while the Gothic choir is one bay deep and ends in five sides. Wall paintings from 1813 show scenes from the life of St John the Baptist, later refreshed in 1908. The high altar, made in 1855, carries figures of Zacharias and Elisabeth, Anna and Joachim, and a painting of the Baptism of Christ. The side altars were added in 1843, one displaying a 1911 image of the Holy Family. A Gothic processional cross from about 1430 and busts of Saints Peter and Paul from 1673 are also kept here. The graveyard surrounds the church, and the war memorial stands among the graves.
