Eibensee

The Eibensee is a small mountain lake in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut, near the village of Sankt Gilgen. It sits at 952 metres above sea level, surrounded by gentle slopes and alpine meadows. The lake drains into the Eibenseebach, which flows north through the Wildmoos before turning southwest and joining the Fuschlsee near Fuschl am See. Its waters come mainly from a short stream fed by the Eibenseealm saddle below the Eibenseekopf and Marienköpfl. The lake measures 280 metres long and 175 metres wide, with a maximum depth of 14 metres. It lies between two modest peaks: the 1,205-metre Eibenseekopf to the west and the 1,074-metre Marienköpfl to the east. The forested shoreline is quiet and undisturbed, owned by the Austrian Federal Forests. Visitors find few buildings nearby, only the Eibenseealm at the southern end. Paths circle the lake, offering gentle walks through grassland and light woodland. The water stays cool even in summer, reflecting the surrounding slopes. Anglers sometimes visit, though catches are modest. From the lakeside, views stretch to nearby hills without any large settlements in sight.
