Lenautheater

The Lenautheater stands in the heart of Stockerau, a town in Lower Austria. It occupies the upper floor of a former brewery, a Baroque building in the town centre. The space was once used for small events before being converted into a theatre in 2009. The theatre is part of the Z2000 cultural centre and has 140 seats. Performances run from late September to mid-June each year. The theatre was founded by Richard Maynau and is now led by Eva Kronberger as artistic director. It has strong support from notable Austrian figures such as Felix Dvorak and Ernst Stankovski. The theatre’s name honours Nikolaus Lenau, a 19th-century writer who worked in Stockerau. Its programme includes original productions, guest performances, and a focus on children’s and youth theatre. The aim is to introduce new audiences to theatre in Stockerau and the surrounding Weinviertel region. Visitors enter a compact but well-designed space with tiered seating for 140 people. The stage is small but versatile, suitable for plays, readings, and literature competitions. The theatre’s programme also includes workshops and events designed to engage young audiences. The building itself retains some of its original brewery features, adding character to the modern performance space. The Lenausaal is a modest yet lively cultural venue in the town’s cultural life.
