St. Nikolaus

The Wallfahrtskirche hl. Nikolaus in Dormitz is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in the village of Dormitz, part of the parish of Nassereith in Tirol. Standing under Denkmalschutz, it blends Gothic origins with later Baroque additions. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, though its fame comes from the veneration of the Madonna, known as Our Lady of Dormitz. The church has been a pilgrimage site since the 15th century, when a statue of Mary with Child became the focus of devotion. In the Baroque period, entire communities from the Außerfern region made annual pilgrimages here. The church’s interior features frescoes by Josef Jais from 1746, including depictions of the continents and scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas. The high altar houses a late-Gothic Madonna and Child, a revered object of pilgrimage. Outside, the west façade displays a Baroque gable with a mosaic of Mary and Child by Josef Pfefferle. The exterior walls hold a rare Baroque outdoor Stations of the Cross, painted by Josef Jais in the mid-18th century. Inside, the church’s four-bay nave and polygonal choir are linked by a high rounded arch. The frescoes, altarpieces, and sculptures reflect centuries of artistic and spiritual tradition.
