Sauberge

The Sauberge is a wooded hill range in the Innerste Uplands of eastern Lower Saxony. It rises to 317 metres at Hammerstein’s Höhe and forms part of the Lower Saxon Hills. The hills lie between the Hildesheim Forest and the historic Ambergau region. The Lamme valley borders them to the west, while the Innerste and Nette rivers flow past to the north and east. Nearby towns include Bad Salzdetfurth, Bockenem and Holle, each a few kilometres away. The Sauberge are crisscrossed by forest tracks and walking trails, though no roads cross the unpopulated ridge. An eighteen-hole golf course sits on the northern slope of Hammerstein’s Höhe. A hunting preserve restricts access in places, home to fallow deer and a large wild boar population. Birdlife is rich, with red kites common around the forest edges and woodpeckers such as the middle spotted and grey-headed species present. Visitors find quiet forest paths and open ridge walks with wide views. The golf course offers manicured fairways against a backdrop of woodland. Wildlife sightings include buzzards, goshawks and songbirds like the firecrest and crested tit. The rivers Lamme, Innerste and Nette provide scenic boundaries and occasional access points to the hills.
