Barons Court tube station

Barons Court is an Underground station in West Kensington, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It stands on Gliddon Road near Talgarth Road, in a deep brick-sided cutting. Two lines serve the station: the District line runs between Hammersmith and West Kensington, while the Piccadilly line runs between Hammersmith and Earl’s Court. East of the station the Piccadilly line dives into tunnel, but the District line continues on the surface. The cutting keeps eastbound Piccadilly trains open to the air until Arnos Grove. The station opened in 1905 to serve new housing and the Piccadilly line when it began in 1906. Its single-storey pavilion was designed by Harry Ford with Classical and Art Nouveau details, and the building is now Grade II listed. Wooden benches on the platform carry enamelled metal panels with the station name, a unique feature on the Underground. The Grade II listing covers terracotta facing and Art Nouveau lettering that survive from 1906. A major restoration returned the station to its original green and cream colour scheme in the 1990s. Visitors find two island platforms that allow cross-platform interchange between the District and Piccadilly lines. The outer tracks carry District line trains, the inner pair Piccadilly line trains. The station building faces a parade of shops built in 1926. Nearby are the Queen’s Club tennis venue, LAMDA drama school, and Margravine Cemetery. Charing Cross Hospital is advertised at the station exit across Talgarth Road.
