Shillhope Law

Shillhope Law is a hill in the southern Cheviots, a range of hills in Northumberland. It stands at 501 metres with a prominence of 158 metres, making it a Marilyn. The hill has steep, grassy sides and a small summit, typical of its neighbours. A low col at 343 metres cuts the ridge to The Cheviot, giving it its Marilyn status. The narrow road from Alwinton reaches the hill’s foot, easing access. On the opposite side of the valley lies the Otterburn Training Area. Shillhope Law is worth the journey for its distinctive Marilyn status among the Cheviots. The hill’s relative height and prominence set it apart from its neighbours. The training area nearby adds a sense of activity without live ammunition. Two farms, Barrowburn and Shillmoor, provide starting points for climbs. A circular walk of about five miles combines both ascents. The view is limited by surrounding hills, except to the south and south-east. A visitor finds steep grassy slopes and a narrow summit ridge. The ascent from the farms is challenging but rewarding. The col at 343 metres marks the ridge’s lowest point. The Otterburn Training Area lies across the valley, visible from the hill. The surrounding landscape is dominated by ridges and hills of similar height. The southern and south-eastern views offer the clearest sightlines. The hill’s Marilyn status is its main claim to distinction.
