Mineralogisches Museum Münster
The Mineralogical Museum in Münster belongs to the University of Münster and presents the three main fields of mineralogy: crystallography, mineral science and petrology, along with their industrial uses. It sits on the Hüfferstraße, close to the university’s palace-like main building. The museum’s collection supports teaching and research by showing a wide range of crystalline and non-crystalline materials. Its exhibition covers about 500 square metres over two floors, much of it donated by private collectors and companies. The ground floor introduces visitors to crystal systems and growth, while the Special Collection follows Karl Hugo Strunz’s internationally recognised classification of the most common and important minerals. Upstairs, the displays focus on igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Visitors find well-labelled specimens arranged to show how minerals form and how they are used. The upstairs galleries let people compare different rock types side by side. Labels explain each piece’s origin and significance, linking the samples to the university’s research. The building itself, rebuilt in 1963 after wartime damage, stands near the historic Schloss, giving the museum a quiet setting in the city centre.
