Jonsberg

The Jonsberg is a gently sloping, cone-shaped mountain in the Zittauer Gebirge range. It stands just east of the village of Jonsdorf and south-east of Oybin. The entire hillside is covered in dense forest, giving it a quiet, green presence. A narrow-gauge railway line runs along its western slope towards Jonsdorf. To the south, the Hain road passes by, with the old Leipaer Straße branching off it and skirting the eastern edge of the mountain. The mountain is a popular starting point for hikes, with routes leading up from Jonsdorf, Oybin or the small settlement of Hain. A car park at the ‘Stern’ junction, where the old Leipaer Straße splits off, makes a convenient base for walkers. In winter a prepared cross-country ski trail circles the Jonsberg, offering a quiet way through the snow. When snow conditions allow, the old Leipaer Straße itself becomes a ski route as far as Olbersdorf. Visitors find a peaceful wooded summit reached by straightforward forest paths. The views open out over the surrounding countryside, with the villages of Jonsdorf and Oybin clearly visible below. The narrow-gauge railway can be seen winding through the valley on the western side. The old Leipaer Straße, now mainly used by walkers and skiers, adds a sense of history to the landscape.
