Pfarrkirche Obsteig

The parish church of Obsteig stands in the hamlet of Unterstrass, part of the municipality of Obsteig in the Imst district of Tirol. It is dedicated to Saint Joseph and belongs to the Silz deanery in the Diocese of Innsbruck. The building and its adjoining cemetery are protected as historic monuments. The present church was erected in 1765 in simple Baroque style and raised to parish rank in 1891. Its tower dates from the mid-19th century, and a thorough renovation took place in 1974–75. The interior is divided into three bays, each covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, and the choir ends in a five-sided apse. Inside, the entire painted scheme was entrusted to Wolfram Köberl, who completed it in 1981. The central ceiling fresco shows the twelve-year-old Jesus among the doctors in the Temple, with God the Father appearing above. Around the walls Köberl depicted the four Evangelists, each holding a scroll with a biblical quotation in German. The high altar, dating from about 1770, carries statues by Martin Falbesoner and a painting of Saint Joseph by Franz Anton Zeiller. The side altars are dedicated to Aloysius, Isidor and the Sacred Heart, while the pulpit, a statue of Saint Joseph by Hermann Rieser, and a 1903 figure shrine of the Immaculate Conception enrich the space.
