St Rhwydrys's Church

St Rhwydrys’s Church stands on the Isle of Anglesey near the village of Cemlyn. Built in the mid-12th century, it is one of the oldest churches on the island. The nave and the rounded doorway survive from that period. Renovations in the 19th century updated the rest of the building. It was recognised as a Grade II* listed structure in 1970. The church is dedicated to Saint Rhwydrys and occupies an isolated spot close to the Cemlyn nature reserve. It first appears in the Norwich Taxation of 1254, confirming its medieval importance. The rounded doorway and nave remain from the original 12th-century construction. Grade II* listing protects its historic fabric. The setting keeps the church free from modern intrusions. Inside, the simple nave and chancel show the church’s age. The rounded doorway frames the entrance, a fine example of 12th-century craftsmanship. The 19th-century work blends with the older stonework. Outside, the surrounding countryside stretches away from the churchyard. The isolation adds to the sense of stepping back in time.
