The Colloredo-Sudhaus stands in the centre of Hallein, a town in the Salzburg district. It is a two-storey classical building that looks more like a small palace than an industrial works. The red-marble entrance portal bears the coat of arms of Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo, who ordered its construction at the end of the 18th century.
For a short time it served as a salt-boiling house, but the design proved faulty and the plant closed within five years. After decades as an industrial shell it was converted into flats, then later restored to become an office and event venue. It is the last building of its kind built before the great Saline works on Perner Island replaced local salt production in the 19th century.
Visitors see the symmetrical façade, the marble doorway and the twin towers at the rear. Inside, the restored interiors host meetings and celebrations. The quiet square in front keeps the building’s story separate from the town’s busy streets.
