Pfarrkirche hl. Michael, Orth an der Donau

The Catholic parish church of St Michael stands east of Orth Castle in the riverside town of Orth an der Donau in Lower Austria. Built for the local community, it occupies a prominent place near the old market square. The church belongs to the Marchfeld deanery within the Vienna archdiocese and has been officially listed as a historic monument. The church’s origins go back to the 9th century, though the parish itself was probably founded around 1100 by Regensburg diocese. After damage in the 1529 Turkish siege and again in 1683, the building was rebuilt and enlarged in 1689 under Count Strattmann, preserving its late-Gothic core. The massive west tower still shows its original defensive features, including shot-holes and a 17th-century onion dome renewed in 1782. Inside, the three-bay nave is covered by a barrel vault on pilasters, while the choir has a five-sided apse with matching vaulting. Visitors enter through the tower porch into a bright, plain nave. The high altar of 1780 carries a painted Michael and the Eye of God, framed by statues of Peter and Paul. The pulpit from the late 17th century displays figures of the four apostles between twisted columns. The organ case dates from the late 18th century, with an 1848–59 interior by Josef Loyp. A small gilded copper plaque marks the 1620 grave of the Graswein family. The church’s sober baroque style and surviving medieval fragments offer a quiet record of the town’s long history.
