Glen Albyn

Glen Albyn was a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Inverness, Scotland. It stood beside the River Ness for more than a century before its buildings were cleared in 1988. Founded in 1846 by James Sutherland, who served as Provost of Inverness, the distillery shaped the town’s industry for generations. After closure in 1983 its site became a gap in the riverside landscape. In 2022 the Glen Albyn brand returned with Lord French, Baron de Freyne, as honorary president. The distillery’s rarity drives collectors to pay high prices at auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams. Most of its whisky was used in blends, leaving few single malt bottles available. A 1852 bottling signed by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli reached $132,000 at a July 2022 sale. Other bottles regularly fetch up to $4,000 each on the international market. The brand’s relaunch now offers a modern expression of the classic Highland style. Visitors to Inverness can still sense the distillery’s presence along the riverbank where its warehouses once stood. The riverside path passes the empty site, linking the city centre to Ness Islands. Nearby distilleries like Glen Ord remain open for tours and tastings. The Glen Albyn brand’s revival brings its legacy back to whisky cabinets and auctions worldwide.
