Clonard Monastery

Clonard Monastery stands on the Falls Road in west Belfast, a Catholic church run by the Redemptorists. It began in 1897 as a small tin church beside Clonard House, then grew into a French Gothic monastery and later a permanent church. The Church of the Holy Redeemer opened in 1911 to serve the expanding Catholic population. The site became known for its devotional innovations. In 1897 it founded men’s and women’s confraternities that combined prayer with practical instruction. A perpetual novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour started soon after, drawing pilgrims from across Ireland. During the Troubles it lay on the dividing line between the Falls and Shankill roads, where priests such as Frs Alec Reid and Gerry Reynolds worked to protect residents. Today the monastery remains a place of worship and peacemaking. Annual novenas still attract tens of thousands of visitors. Rooms in the complex hosted secret talks that helped shape the 1994 IRA ceasefire. The building also hosts music festivals, linking faith with community life in the city.
