The Warren

The Warren is a nature reserve covering thirteen and a half hectares in St Mary Cray, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Ancient oaks and silver birches form the main woodland, with bracken, foxgloves and bluebells on the ground. Grass clearings open the canopy and a pond holds rare London plants such as blue fleabane and hare’s-foot clover. Green woodpeckers and nuthatches nest among the trees, while bees and butterflies move through the sunlight. The site is managed by the London Wildlife Trust and is recognised as Grade I for nature conservation. The reserve’s Grade I status reflects its ecological importance within the borough. Rare plants like blue fleabane and hare’s-foot clover grow beside the pond, while the woodland supports uncommon birds. Bees and butterflies use the clearings and flowering plants for feeding and breeding. The mix of ancient oaks, birches and open grassland creates varied habitats in a compact area. Access from Sheepcote Lane makes the site easy to reach without crossing busy roads. Visitors walk beneath tall oaks and birches along wide paths and smaller trails. Bluebells carpet the woodland floor in spring, followed by foxgloves in summer. The pond attracts dragonflies and water birds, and the clearings offer open views across the reserve. Bees and butterflies can be seen feeding on flowers throughout the warmer months. The atmosphere is quiet, with birdsong replacing the sounds of the city nearby.
