Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie

The Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie stands in Regensburg’s city park, its main building a former 19th-century turnhalle. Across the way is the 17th-century Schützenhaus, now the museum’s administration block. The ensemble includes later extensions and a portikus whose Pallas Athene now faces away from visitors. In 2006 Magdalena Jetelová wrapped the portikus columns in tilting wooden frames draped with red carpet for her installation Venceremos/Sale, kept on permanent display. The museum’s name was finalised in 2003 after decades of growth and renaming. It preserves German art from former eastern territories and east-central Europe, including works by Lovis Corinth, Käthe Kollwitz and Gerhard Richter. The collection numbers two thousand paintings, five hundred three-dimensional pieces and thirty thousand works on paper spanning 1800 to today. A recent addition is over 160 works by Ben Muthofer, donated in 2009. Every two years the museum awards the Lovis-Corinth-Preis to an outstanding artist. Inside, rooms display paintings and sculptures alongside graphic cabinets. Outside, the adjacent park holds open-air sculptures by Otto Herbert Hajek, Waldemar Grzimek and others. The museum’s sculpture wall shows works by Bernhard Heiliger. Changing exhibitions and the biennial prize exhibition bring fresh perspectives on central European modernism.
