Kath. Pfarrkirche Hl. Dreifaltigkeit Assling

The parish church of Assling stands on rising ground in the centre of Unterassling village, part of the municipality of Assling in the Lienz district of East Tirol. A Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, it belongs to the deanery of Lienz in the diocese of Innsbruck and is listed as a protected monument. First mentioned in 1187, the parish was placed under the Augustinian canons of Neustift near Brixen in 1261 but only gained full control of its rights in 1399. After a fire in 1723 the building was rebuilt by master mason Nikolaus Ströner and consecrated again in 1726. Around 1860 the architect Ludwig Tschurtschenthaler added the present neo-Romanesque porch. The church is a large, plain Baroque structure with a northern tower and a walled cemetery on three sides, forming a unified ensemble with the adjoining vicarage. Inside, the nave vault carries ceiling paintings by Wolfram Köberl from 1964. The high altar dates from 1865, the organ case from 1820, and one bell bears the name of Lukas Graßmayr from 1673. On the south wall a fragment of a 15th-century crucifixion fresco survives, showing Christ flanked by the Virgin, John and a holy bishop.
