Herz-Jesu-Kirche

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche stands in Graz as the city’s largest church, designed entirely by architect Georg Hauberrisser between 1881 and 1887. Built in the Neogothic style, it features a tall nave and an under-church beneath. Its tower reaches 109.6 metres, making it Austria’s third-highest church tower. The stained glass windows are rare surviving examples of Neogothic art in the country. Almost every detail remains as Hauberrisser planned it, apart from the altar area, which Gustav Troger remodelled in 1988. The church’s scale and craftsmanship reflect Hauberrisser’s careful vision. The nave rises high above the congregation, creating a sense of grandeur. Below, the under-church adds depth to the building’s design. The tower dominates the skyline, drawing the eye upward. Inside, the stained glass casts coloured light across the space, a feature now uncommon in Austrian churches. Troger’s altar update came a century after the church’s completion, keeping the interior relevant while preserving the original style. Visitors enter a space shaped by Hauberrisser’s Neogothic ideals. The high nave and towering structure create an imposing yet serene atmosphere. Stained glass windows line the walls, their intricate designs visible in soft daylight. The under-church offers a quieter space below the main floor. The altar area, updated later, provides a contrast to the rest of the church’s historic design. The tower’s height allows views over Graz from its upper levels.
