Bailiffgate Museum

The Bailiffgate Museum stands in Alnwick, Northumberland, inside the 1836 St Mary’s Church. Its displays trace the town’s past through centuries of social history. The building still holds its original organ, adding to the sense of place. Volunteers run the museum, supported by trustees who care for its collections. It sits close to Alnwick Castle, linking two layers of local heritage. The museum’s collection focuses on Alnwick and its district. Agricultural tools, domestic objects and railway items show everyday life. A rare 18th-century fire pump and mining artefacts illustrate practical skills. The Davison Bible, printed in one hundred parts, reflects William Davison’s push for wider learning. The Rothbury Football, a small stuffed leather ball, recalls medieval village matches between Thropton and Rothbury. Visitors find a separate gallery for local artists’ exhibitions. Stella Vine, who grew up in Alnwick, donated three paintings in 2004. One shows Howick beach, another her childhood home in Clayport Gardens. A virtual exhibition lists 1,300 names of First World War fallen from the area. Hands-on activities and audio-visual exhibits make the past accessible to all ages.
