St. John the Baptist's Church, Rimavská Sobota

St John the Baptist’s Church stands in the centre of Rimavská Sobota, a town in southern Slovakia. The first church on this spot was built in the 11th century and formed the heart of the medieval market square. A great fire in 1506 destroyed the town and the original building, which was then rebuilt. By the late 18th century the second church had to be taken down. Between 1774 and 1790 a new single-aisled church rose in the Neo-Classical style, with touches of late Baroque decoration. The present church keeps the three-storey tower from the earlier building. Its west front is framed by volutes and topped with a Baroque lantern, a reminder of the town’s layered past. Inside, the Neo-Classical lines are softened by curved galleries and pilasters. The high altar is dedicated to John the Baptist, the church’s patron saint. Visitors enter through the tower porch and find a plain rectangular nave lit by tall windows. The curved wooden galleries run along three sides, supported by slender columns. Above the altar hangs a painting of the baptism of Christ, framed in gilded woodwork. The lantern on the tower gives the interior a gentle glow at dusk. Outside, the church overlooks the quiet square, where the medieval street plan can still be traced.
