Burg Bärenberg

Burg Bärenberg is a ruined spur castle near Königsfeld in the Black Forest. It stands on a ridge of the Hutzelberg at about 718 metres above sea level. The site overlooks the surrounding valleys and woods of the Black Forest-Baar region. Local names for the ruin include Bärenburg or Weiberzahn. It was built by the lords of Burgberg, who served the lords of Falkenstein and Zimmern, towards the end of the 11th century. The first written record of the castle dates from 1116.

The castle passed through several noble families. After the Burgberg lords it was held by the lords of Geroldseck and later by the counts of Württemberg. The main tower, built of roughly hewn stone, survives only as fragments. A deep neck ditch cuts off the spur from the ridge. The nearby Burgberg castle, built around 1116, once served as a prison for Bärenberg.

Visitors walk along the overgrown paths that lead to the remaining walls and foundations. The view from the site stretches across the Black Forest and the Baar uplands. Information boards explain the castle’s history and the lives of its former owners. The quiet woodland setting makes it a peaceful place to explore. The ruins themselves are small but give a sense of the castle’s former strength.
