Karhorn

The Karhorn is a 2,416-metre peak in the Lechquellen range of the Austrian Alps. It stands south-west of Warth, between the Auenfelder Horn to the north-west and the Warther Horn to the north-east. The mountain forms the highest point of the Karhorngruppe, a compact chain of summits. The Westgipfel once bore the name Durechelenstein, recorded in a 1059 deed of Emperor Heinrich IV. The name faded from memory, leaving scholars unsure of the medieval boundary line. Walther Flaig later proved the Westgipfel’s hole matched the old description and restored the original name, though it has not yet become common usage. A marked trail from Auenfelder Sattel climbs the South Spur in UIAA grade I difficulty. An alternative is the Karhorn Klettersteig, a medium-grade via ferrata starting from Wartherhornsattel at 2,193 metres. Both routes offer views across the Lechquellengebirge and down to the valleys below.
