Pfarrkirche hl. Kreuz

The Roman Catholic parish church of Brandberg stands surrounded by a cemetery in the village of Brandberg in the Schwaz district of Tirol. It is dedicated to the Holy Cross and belongs to the deanery of Zell am Ziller in the archdiocese of Salzburg. The church building, the war memorial at the cemetery chapel, and the surrounding cemetery are all protected as historic monuments. The church was built in 1787 by Andreas Hueber and consecrated in 1808. In 1891 it became an independent parish church. The cemetery was laid out when the church was built in 1786 and was extended southwards in 1980. A new mortuary hall and cemetery chapel were added at that time. The church’s exterior is a classical rectangular hall with an eastern tower attached to the choir section. The tower is topped with a small dome. Inside, the nave has three bays and the square choir has a plain flat ceiling. A 1932 fresco by Josef Haun shows Christ as judge in the choir. Virgil Groder’s ceiling paintings in the nave were painted over around 1950. The high altar is an 18th-century column altar with a painting of the Crucifixion from the first half of the 19th century. The two side altars, from the same period, hold a statue of Saint Joseph and a Madonna figure dating to the early 17th century. The organ was built by Reinisch-Pirchner in 1972.
