Crichton Collegiate Church

Crichton Collegiate Church stands in farmland about a kilometre south-west of the hamlet of Crichton in Midlothian. The building began in the 1440s when William Crichton, Lord Chancellor of Scotland, founded a collegiate church for prayers and masses on behalf of his family. Completed in 1449, it was a cruciform structure with a tall central tower and separate spaces for the lord’s household and poorer worshippers. The Crichtons backed the wrong side in 15th-century politics and lost their lands, leaving the church to suffer during the Reformation when its windows were smashed and floors dug up. By the 1580s it had been patched up as the local parish kirk, though the nave remained roofless. Restoration came in stages: Parliament declared it the parish church for all time in 1641, a new roof was added in the 1820s, and a full 19th-century revival installed stained glass by Ballantine and Gardener, oak pews and a Joseph Brook organ. After the Church of Scotland closed the building in 1992, the Crichton Collegiate Church Trust took over and repaired the organ, windows, lighting, walls, roof and tower in 1998. The church is now category A listed and hosts weddings, funerals, concerts and recordings by Delphian Records, as well as occasional inter-denominational services. Visitors find a T-shaped ruin with a surviving chancel roof and central tower. The nave floor is still earthen, showing the damage done in 1560, while the restored chancel contains the 1899 organ and Victorian glass. Outside, the single-track lane from Pathhead passes the church before reaching Crichton Castle, placing the ruins against a backdrop of low hills and farmland. The quiet setting and the contrast between medieval decay and later craftsmanship make the site memorable.
